I’ve been testing the popular Sun Warrior Protein lately, and I’m happy to state that finally there’s a quality protein supplement available for vegan bodybuilders and fitnesss enthusiasts – even raw vegans. While I’m personally not [yet] a vegan, I have had fantastic results from eating a predominantly raw vegan diet. I consistently get my best gains in the gym when I increase my intake of plant foods – most of them being raw, and this mirrors the results of others as well. There is a reason the whole raw foods thing have become so popular lately: Done correctly it works – extremely well in fact.
I’m still not convinced a 100% raw vegan diet is the best solution for bodybuilders, however. After all, bodybuilders do need more protein than regular people – a lot more, in fact – and a raw vegan diet is admittedly going to be fairly low in the protein department. Unless, of course, you use a raw vegan protein supplement, of which there really aren’t a whole lot to choose from in today’s marketplace. Most vegan proteins are not raw, of questionable benefit, taste not-so-great and are seemingly impossible to mix properly sometimes – even with a good blender.

And so I’ve been quite anxious to give this product a try. And honestly, I think it’s a winner. It really is. Sun Warrior Protein is a great product, and one that I now highly recommend to pretty much everyone looking to improve their health, fitness and body composition. Not only does it taste better than the competition, but it comes with a range of benefits that frankly make a lot of other products look, um, not-so-great. Sun Warrior use no chemicals in the extraction process, making this a very clean product – something you cannot say for a lot of the other supplements out there. It also contains MGN-3 (a phytochemical found in rice bran that seems to have cancer fighting properties), it obviously has no heat damage, and the fermentation process makes it a highly bio-available protein, with a complete amino acid profile (with 98.2% assimilation according to the manufacturer). The fact that it’s not a soy product is also very, very important. If you care even the slightest about your health, soy is not something you want – especially unfermented soy protein powders. Stay away, period. Also: there are no artificial sweeteners in this product. In fact, no artificial nothing. Personally, that’s a big plus.
While the mixability is not quite on par with a quality modern whey protein powder, it’s certainly a lot better than many plant proteins I’ve had in the past. Mixing Sun Warrior Protein with a spoon doesn’t work well for me, but it mixes great with even the cheapest blender I’ve got (and that piece of machinery is honestly a total joke). I’ve made Sun Warrior rice protein shakes almost every day the last few weeks, mixing it with milk, rice milk, various kinds of fruit and also putting it in my green smoothies. I use both the unflavoured version and the vanilla flavored one, and prefer the latter when it comes to mixing with fruits only, but the unflavoured version is very versatile and works for almost anything. It’s not at all tasteless – it does taste like, um, fermented rice protein, but not in a way that bothers me much at all. I’ve certainly had protein products that I enjoyed the taste of more, but also appreciate the more natural taste of this product.
At 85% protein, one 21 gram serving of this stuff will give you a decent 17 grams of pure protein, three grams of carbohydrates and 1 gram of fat. You also get a mixture of antioxidants, tocopherols, tocotrienols and vitamins and minerals like thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, phosphorus, iron and potassium.
SunWarrior Protein easily gets Viking Bodybuilding’s stamp of approval. This is a highly recommended product. The price of this product may seem high, but there’s no way I’m not going to keep using this on a regular basis. Sun Warrior Protein could possibly be the healthiest protein supplement out there.
