Things to Consider Before Hiring Movers

You want to make sure all your furniture and personal belongings get to the right destination with no problems. Since moving companies are loosely regulated here are some simple steps to take to make sure the process goes smoothly.

Pack all boxes and clearly mark them before calling the movers. You don’t want to be packing last minute boxes while the movers are there. You want to be watching the movers to make sure they are handling your valuables with care.

Insure all your valuables just in case something happens. Ask about the coverage for lost and/or damaged goods. The moving company must provide liability for the value of the goods they transport, ask about this.

Call the moving company and ask for a written estimate. Never accept an estimate over the phone and don’t use a company that uses this policy.

Always contact the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and ask about the companies complaint record and how the complaints were resolved. If the company has alot of complaints against them you don’t want to use that company.

Ask the moving company for references. They should be able to give you telephone numbers of past clients who they did business with. Make sure you follow through and call them.

Ask lots of questions. Find out what they charge extra for, they may charge extra for climbing stairs, having to use elevators. Ask them if they will come to your home and give you a written in home estimate, if they won’t then look elsewhere. Check to see if they have been in business at least five years.

Don’t use the internet to find a mover. Step away from the keyboard and pick up the phone book and look for movers in your area. That way you can go to their comapany and make sure they are who they say they are. Do they have moving trucks or are they going to hire sub-contractors to do the moving. If they won’t be doing the moving themselves, I would suggest you look elsewhere.

Don’t sign any blank paperwork! That should throw up big red flags if the company wants you to sign anything that they say they will fill out later. Make sure you read what you are signing, even if that means you make the moving company wait.

Two more place you should check is FMCSA’s Safety Violation and Consumer Complaints hotline at 1-800-386-7238 and ask them about any complaint history the company might have.

Then post a message on the message boards and ask if anyone has done any business or knows anyone who’s done business with your moving company.

Ask your friends and family what movers they used. Ask your neighbors who they used or who their friends and family have used.

Most of all if you have any doubts about your moving company, move on and hire someone else. You don’t want to intrust your valuable belongings to just anyone.

The above points will surely have removed your doubts regarding the credibility of movers to a certain extent and help you in selecting some of the best movers in town like Edmonton moving companies, who are quite adept movers with an excellent reputation.
